When you have young children arts and crafts are easy to do and there are always craft supplies in the house. You usually have crayons, glue, paint, scissors, construction paper which can be used for many arts and craft projects.
I added 2 arts and craft project that are easy to make with supplies you might have around the house. Some of the projects are versatile enough to improvise with supplies. We would love your comments and suggestions for new craft ideas.
These 2 craft ideas need a little more than the usual supplies, but can be purchased in any craft store. You will need shells for the sea shell project and yarn and google eyes for the octopus.
HOW TO MAKE A GROOVY OCTOPUS
Styrofoam ball (small) Scissors Yarn ( any color) Tacky glue Google eyes
Instructions
A. Take the yarn and wrap it around your arm about 10 to 12 inches long and in width.
B. Remove the yarn from your arm and cut in the middle, then do 1 more around the arm and cut that one also.
C. Then place the ball at the top of the yarn and section all yarn around the ball covering the ball the best you can.
D. Now tie a string around the yarn at the base of the Styrofoam ball nice and tight.
E. Now divide the yarn into eight sections for the legs and braid each section, trying to divide the yarn evenly. You can tie a ribbon or bow or whatever you like at the end of the each braid.
F. Last you will need glue to attach the google eyes, and place them on the head.
G. You are all done.
SEA SHELLS
One of my favorite summer activities is going to the beach with my family. We spend a whole day there and the boys and my husband fish and play while I walk the beach and collect sea shells.
I have more sea shells than you can imagine. I separate them into categories. The shells have a lot of character and some have distinct formations from swirling around in the ocean. Some shells have holes in just the right place which makes them perfect for arts and crafts.
When I get home I put some of them in bowls or glass jars and use them as centerpieces and decorative accents around the house.
Ideas For Sea Shell Projects
On those rainy weekends or winter snow days when the boys are off from school I pull out the sea shells. I cover the table with a vinyl table cover, take out the paints, glue, jewelry supplies and we are ready to begin our arts and crafts day.
Necklaces and wind chimes are a favorite. The shells that have the hole in the perfect position make excellent necklaces and wind chimes.
The larger shells are great to give as gifts. My younger son loves to use glitter paint and has each one specially marked to give as a gift.
Sculptures
Some of the larger oyster shells make great sculptures. We all work on a creating a sculpture together. Its a fun project especially when the sculpture takes on a recognizable shape. The boys always come up with a great name for it.
